GST Calculator Online — Calculate GST Instantly for Free

Welcome to My GST Calc — India's most trusted free GST calculator online. Whether you are a business owner, chartered accountant, freelancer, or trader, our online GST calculator helps you compute Goods and Services Tax accurately within seconds. No registration, no subscription, no complicated steps — just fast, accurate GST calculations right in your browser.

What is a GST Calculator?

A GST calculator is a digital tool that automates the computation of Goods and Services Tax on any product or service. Instead of manually applying GST formulas, you simply enter the base price and select the applicable GST rate (0%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%), and the calculator instantly shows you the tax amount, CGST, SGST/IGST split, and the final gross amount. Our Indian GST calculator is specifically built for India's dual GST structure and handles both intrastate and interstate transactions seamlessly.

How to Use Our Free GST Calculator Online

Using our GST calc is extremely straightforward:

  1. Enter the Amount — Type in the price of your product or service (base price or MRP).
  2. Select GST Rate — Choose the applicable GST slab: 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 6%, 12%, 18%, 28%, or enter a custom rate.
  3. Choose Calculation Type — Select Add GST (Exclusive) to calculate tax on top of a base price, or Remove GST (Inclusive) to extract tax from a total amount or MRP.
  4. Select Transaction Type — Choose Intrastate (same state) for CGST + SGST split, or Interstate for IGST.
  5. Instant Results — View the breakdown: base amount, CGST, SGST/IGST, total tax, gross amount, and the amount in Indian words (Lakhs/Crores format).

GST Calculation Formulas — Inclusive vs Exclusive

Our online GST calculator uses the official government-prescribed formulas:

📊 GST Exclusive — Add GST to Base Price

GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate%) ÷ 100

Gross Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount

📊 GST Inclusive / Reverse GST — Extract GST from MRP

Base Amount = Total ÷ (1 + GST Rate% ÷ 100)

GST Amount = Total − Base Amount

CGST, SGST & IGST — Understanding India's Dual GST System

India follows a dual GST model where both the Central and State Governments levy tax simultaneously. Our Indian GST calculator automatically splits the tax based on the transaction type:

  • CGST (Central GST) + SGST (State GST) — For intrastate transactions (seller and buyer in the same state). Tax is split 50:50 between Centre and State.
  • IGST (Integrated GST) — For interstate transactions (seller and buyer in different states) and imports. Collected by the Central Government.
  • UTGST (Union Territory GST) — Replaces SGST for Union Territories without their own legislature (e.g., Chandigarh, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands).

Frequently Asked Questions

GST Calculation, Formulas & Rules FAQ

Authoritative answers to common questions on calculating GST, formulas, tax slabs, GSTIN rules, and invoice compliance in India.

To calculate Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, you need the base amount of the product or service and the applicable GST rate (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%). Depending on whether the price is exclusive or inclusive of tax, use the following methods:

  • GST Exclusive (Add GST to Base Price): Multiply the base amount by the GST rate percentage. Formula: GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate%) ÷ 100. Total Invoice Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount. For example, on a ₹1,000 base amount at 18% GST, the tax is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180.
  • GST Inclusive (Extract GST from Total / MRP): Divide the total amount by 1 plus the GST rate percentage. Formula: Base Amount = Total Amount ÷ (1 + (GST Rate% ÷ 100)). Tax Amount = Total Amount − Base Amount. For example, for an MRP of ₹1,180 at 18% GST, the base is ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180.
  • Tax Component Split: For intrastate transactions (same state), the tax is divided equally into 50% CGST and 50% SGST. For interstate transactions (different states or imports), 100% is levied as IGST.

The official GST calculation formulas prescribed under Indian GST regulations are:

  1. GST Exclusive Formula (Adding GST to Base Price):
    • GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate%) ÷ 100
    • Gross / Invoice Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount
  2. GST Inclusive Formula (Extracting GST from Gross Amount or MRP):
    • Base / Pre-Tax Amount = Total Amount ÷ (1 + (GST Rate% ÷ 100))
    • GST Amount = Total Amount − Base Amount
    • Direct GST formula: GST Amount = (Total Amount × GST Rate%) ÷ (100 + GST Rate%)
  3. Tax Allocation Formulas:
    • Intrastate Supplies (Same State): CGST = GST Amount ÷ 2 and SGST/UTGST = GST Amount ÷ 2
    • Interstate Supplies (Different States / Imports): IGST = GST Amount (100%)

No, GST is not always 18%. While 18% is the most common standard tax rate applied to most commercial services, software, IT, banking, and mid-range consumer goods, India follows a multi-tier GST rate structure prescribed by the GST Council:

  • 0% (Nil Rate): Essential commodities such as fresh vegetables, unbranded milk, eggs, curd, unprocessed food grains, salt, and basic educational and healthcare services.
  • 0.25% & 3% (Special Slabs): Rough diamonds and precious gemstones (0.25%); Gold, silver, platinum, and jewellery (3%).
  • 5% (Merit Rate): Packaged food staples, domestic cooking gas (LPG), essential medicines, tea, coffee, edible oil, apparel under ₹1,000, and economy air travel.
  • 12% (Standard Lower Rate): Processed foods, butter, cheese, computers, business class flight tickets, and diagnostic medical equipment.
  • 18% (Standard Rate): Telecom, financial services, IT solutions, hotels, restaurants, electronics, and capital goods.
  • 28% (Luxury & Demerit Rate): Automobiles, aerated beverages, tobacco, pan masala, and cement (often subject to an additional GST Compensation Cess).

To determine or reverse-calculate the GST percentage (tax rate) applied on a transaction when you have the base price and the tax charged (or total invoice amount):

  • Formula 1 (When Base Price and GST Amount are known):
    GST Percentage (%) = (GST Amount ÷ Base Amount) × 100
    Example: If the base price is ₹5,000 and GST charged is ₹900, then: (900 ÷ 5,000) × 100 = 18% GST.
  • Formula 2 (When Total Price and Base Price are known):
GST Percentage (%) = ((Total Gross Price − Base Amount) ÷ Base Amount) × 100
    Example: If total price is ₹1,120 on a base of ₹1,000, then: ((1,120 − 1,000) ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 12% GST.
  • Formula 3 (When Total MRP and Base Price are known):
    GST Percentage (%) = [(Total MRP ÷ Base Amount) − 1] × 100

This reverse calculation helps businesses and auditors verify whether a vendor has charged the correct statutory GST tax slab on a tax invoice.

Calculating 18% GST on any amount is fast and straightforward using either multiplication or division:

  1. Adding 18% GST (Exclusive Price):
    • Multiply the base amount by 0.18 to compute the 18% GST amount.
    • Multiply the base amount by 1.18 to get the total invoice gross amount directly.
    • Example: For a base amount of ₹2,500:
      • 18% GST = ₹2,500 × 0.18 = ₹450
      • Total Gross = ₹2,500 + ₹450 = ₹2,950 (or ₹2,500 × 1.18 = ₹2,950)
      • For intrastate sales: CGST (9%) = ₹225 and SGST (9%) = ₹225.
  2. Removing / Extracting 18% GST (Inclusive Price / MRP):
    • Divide the total amount by 1.18 to find the original pre-tax base price.
    • Subtract the base price from the total amount to obtain the 18% GST amount.
    • Example: For a total MRP of ₹2,950:
      • Base Amount = ₹2,950 ÷ 1.18 = ₹2,500
      • 18% GST Amount = ₹2,950 − ₹2,500 = ₹450

A buyer (whether an individual retail consumer or a registered B2B business) can use our online GST calculator in several practical ways:

  • Verify Vendor Tax Invoices: Check whether a supplier has applied the correct statutory GST rate and accurately calculated CGST, SGST, or IGST splits before making payment.
  • Extract Pre-Tax Cost from MRP: When buying retail items priced inclusive of tax (MRP), determine the true base price of the item and identify exactly how much GST was charged.
  • Calculate Input Tax Credit (ITC): Registered B2B buyers can determine the exact tax amount they can claim as Input Tax Credit in Table 4 of Form GSTR-3B to offset against their output tax liability.
  • Compare Interstate vs Intrastate Bids: Compare supplier quotations from local and out-of-state vendors to understand the cash flow impact of paying IGST versus CGST + SGST.
  • Calculate Multi-Item Invoices: Use the multi-item calculator tab to combine items with different GST slabs (e.g. 5%, 12%, and 18%) into a unified billing estimate with automated words conversion in Indian Rupees.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was introduced in India on 1 July 2017 through the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act to replace an outdated, fragmented indirect tax system. The primary reasons for introducing GST include:

  1. Eliminating the Cascading Effect ("Tax on Tax"): In the pre-GST regime, central excise, state VAT, CST, octroi, and service taxes were layered upon each other without cross-utilization of input credits. GST unified these into a seamless, unbroken Input Tax Credit (ITC) chain.
  2. Subsuming Multiple Indirect Taxes: GST replaced 17 central and state taxes (including Central Excise, Service Tax, State VAT, Entry Tax, Luxury Tax, and Purchase Tax) and 13 cesses into a single unified tax system.
  3. Creating "One Nation, One Tax, One Market": Harmonized tax rates and procedures across all 28 states and 8 Union Territories removed inter-state trade barriers and economic distortions.
  4. Curbing Tax Evasion & Expanding the Tax Net: Digital compliance through the GST Network (GSTN), e-invoicing, e-way bills, and automated credit matching (GSTR-2B) increased tax transparency and reduced evasion.
  5. Boosting Logistics and Freight Speed: Dismantling state border checkpoints and transit permits reduced freight delivery times by 20% to 30%, significantly lowering supply chain costs for Indian businesses.

To calculate GST on any given amount, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Step 1 — Identify the GST Rate: Check the applicable tax slab (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%) based on the HSN or SAC code of the product or service.
  2. Step 2 — Apply the Relevant Formula:
    • If the amount is Exclusive (Tax is added): Multiply the amount by the GST rate percentage.
      • GST Amount = Amount × (Rate ÷ 100)
      • Total Amount = Amount + GST Amount
      • Example: On ₹10,000 at 18%: GST = 10,000 × 0.18 = ₹1,800; Total = ₹11,800.
    • If the amount is Inclusive (Tax is inside the amount): Divide the amount by (1 + Rate ÷ 100).
      • Base Amount = Amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
      • GST Amount = Amount − Base Amount
      • Example: On ₹11,800 at 18%: Base = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000; GST = ₹1,800.
  3. Step 3 — Allocate Tax to Central & State Heads:
    • Intrastate: 50% as Central GST (CGST) and 50% as State GST (SGST).
    • Interstate: 100% as Integrated GST (IGST).

To calculate GST using a standard physical pocket calculator or mobile phone calculator app, use these precise keystrokes:

  1. Adding GST to a Base Amount (e.g. Add 18% GST to ₹1,000):
    • Using Percentage Key: Type 1000 + 18 % =. The screen displays 1180.
    • Using Multiplier: Type 1000 × 1.18 =. The screen displays 1180.
    • To find only the tax portion: Type 1000 × 18 % (or 1000 × 0.18 =). The screen displays 180.
  2. Removing / Deducting GST from MRP (e.g. Extract 18% GST from ₹1,180):
    • Correct Method: Type 1180 ÷ 1.18 =. The screen displays 1000 (the pre-tax base amount).
    • To get the tax amount: Press − 1180 =. The screen displays -180 (₹180 GST).
    • Common Mistake to Avoid: Do NOT type 1180 - 18%. That subtracts 18% of ₹1,180 (₹212.40), giving ₹967.60, which is incorrect because GST was calculated on the pre-tax base price, not on the inclusive price.
  3. Using Our Online GST Calculator: For 100% accuracy with automated CGST/SGST splitting and Indian words conversion, use the free calculator at the top of this page.

A GSTIN (15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is mandatory depending on business turnover, transaction type, and business model under Sections 22 and 24 of the CGST Act:

  • 1. Turnover-Based Mandatory Registration (Section 22):
    • Suppliers of Goods: Mandatory if aggregate annual turnover exceeds ₹40 Lakhs (₹20 Lakhs for Special Category States: Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura).
    • Suppliers of Services: Mandatory if aggregate annual turnover exceeds ₹20 Lakhs (₹10 Lakhs for Special Category States).
  • 2. Compulsory Registration Irrespective of Turnover (Section 24):
    • Persons making any Inter-State taxable supply of goods.
    • E-Commerce Sellers supplying goods or services through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho.
    • E-Commerce Operators liable to collect Tax Collected at Source (TCS).
    • Persons liable to pay tax under the Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM).
    • Casual Taxable Persons and Non-Resident Taxable Persons.
    • Input Service Distributors (ISD) and TDS Deductors.
  • When is GSTIN NOT Mandatory?
    • Small businesses and freelancers operating solely within their home state whose annual turnover remains below the statutory limits.
    • Dealers exclusively engaged in supplying 100% GST-exempt goods or agricultural produce.
    • Individual consumers purchasing goods or services for personal use.
